While most girls her age were worrying about pimples, doing school homework, and playing games, Pinky de Leon was already raising two kids.
"I eloped when I was 16 years old. Nagkagulo ang buong Pilipinas dahil nawawala ako, since parehong artista ang parents ko, sila Gil de Leon and Celia Dizon," the beautiful star laughingly admitted to Asian Journal. "At that time, my mom and dad had just separated. Maybe, it was my way of getting out of a painful situation. It may have been a form of suppressing the pain. Hindi ko alam; hanggang ngayon hindi ko alam kung bakit ko nagawa iyon," Pinky said.
Pinky gave birth to two children, Tony Boy and Michelle Lejano, while still in her teens.
Then, when she was just in her early 20’s, the young and pretty Pinky, together with her younger brother, Christopher de Leon, were discovered by famous director Lino Brocka. "Batang-bata pa ako noon pero may dalawa na akong anak at hiwalay na ako sa first husband ko. Kami ni Christopher halos sabay na na-discover. Lino Brocka was a contract director then at Lea Productions. He brought me to the studio and I was immediately starred in a movie, Dito sa Aking Puso. It was quickly followed by another movie, Tanikalang Dugo," Pinky recalled. Since acting was in her genes, it is no wonder that Pinky performed excellently and was nominated for FAMAS Best Supporting Actress for Tanikalang Dugo in 1974.
After her success as an actress, a new career quickly followed, again instigated by Director Lino Brocka. " He told me,’you’re going to sing’ and then he brought me to voice coach Minda Azarcon. Soon after that, I was given a role in Gypsy and I performed live at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. That started my singing career,’ shared Pinky. She was then offered regular shows at the Top of the Hilton.
Pinky’s phenomenal rise to stardom has spawned over 50 movies, several TV shows, countless concerts in many countries and many awards.
"I was so busy then, making movies, doing concerts, and taping for two weekly TV shows, a drama anthology, Ito Ako Pinky and a musical, Some like it Pinky. Gumagapang na ako pauwi," she laughed.
Among her films are Diliryo, Muntik na Kitang Minahal, Chavit Singson Story, Andres Manambit, Gobernador, Boyong Manalac: Hoodlum Terminator, Barumbado, Alabok sa Ulap, Carol Abad, Ang Kabiyak, Okey Lang Basta’t Kapiling Kita,Tatlong Bulaklak,The Magic Curse,Daluyong at Habagat, Ang Daigdig ay Isang Patak ng Luha, Siya’y Umalis, Siya’y Dumating, Huli huli Yan!, Ugat ,Tanikalang Dugo, and Dito sa Aking Puso. Some of the TV shows where Pinky starred in were Recuerdo de Amor, Forever in My Heart, Santa Santita and Captain Barbell.
